The story I am telling through this animation is meant to be seen as a shared experience for anyone who is going through some sort of change in their lives, especially young people transitioning into adulthood. I hope to encapsulate the feelings of fear and anxiousness surrounding change, as well as wonder and excitement of new opportunities through my use of color and physical animation. My characters’ relationships are based on the relationships in my own life: my sister and my two moms are the inspiration behind the supporting characters. This is a short coming of age story meant to comfort the viewer that they are not alone in their feelings of fear, but through love, support, and trust, reassure them that they can flourish as their life transitions to a new phase.

Artist Bio

Carly graduated from UConn in December 2020 with a BFA in Digital Media and Design with a concentration in 3D Animation. She has always loved storytelling, whether through art, speaking, music, writing, or animation. The idea for this story came to her during her second to last semester of school – she realized that a chapter of her life was quickly coming to a close. She asked herself (often), “Am I ready to move on to the next part of my life? Will I make it in the world? I mean, ready or not, here it comes.” After a month of sheer panic, she realized that she is more than ready, and that she just has to trust in herself, her abilities, and her support system. “Toucan Do it” is a story about a young toucan feeling the exact same way.

Carly now works as a Design Technologist at Greenhouse Studios. She will also continue creating and freelancing on her own.

In her free time, Carly enjoys woodworking, rock climbing, longboarding, and learning new skills. She also enjoys spending time with her family and friends, who helped inspire this story.
