Glittergirl Online is a 2D animatic about a young black girl who buys a VR headset. The girl lives her everyday life in a monochrome reality where she is bored with the world around her. She becomes enamored with an online game called Glittergirl Online. Using the VR headset, she is transported into the game's environment where she explores different graphical backgrounds and characters. Her life is suddenly filled with color and she finds new means for expressing herself.

The work is exploring how people express themselves through digital avatars and how online games can play a fantasy role, allowing a person to escape from an otherwise dull life.

Artist Bio

Simone Alston is a 21 year old college student with an interest in net art and animation. She is studying Digital Media & Design at the University of Connecticut, Stamford, with a focus on 2D animation and motion design. A large majority of her childhood was spent online on virtual worlds, and so much of her work is influenced by these games she used to play, such as IMVU, Second Life, Fantage, Zwinky, Meez, Club Penguin, Webkinz, etc. She is excited to continue to make her own artwork and animated creations after she graduates from UConn.
