Artist Statement
The Writing on the Walls is a silent animated short. Utilizing 2D animation on 3D modeled backgrounds.
“While walking to the bathroom I was suddenly reminded of when I first came to university. I spent most of my time in the library, it was my safe space for quiet and studying. I’d spent time in the cubicles and noticed the writing on the walls. Talking about giving up hope or ending up in debt in college. It reminded me of the writing I’d see on the bathroom walls, in school, or at my family’s jobs. Everyone had something to say or a mark they wanted to leave.
During a recent summer my boyfriend and I walked to a park, very far, and went through hidden tunnels full of graffiti. One tunnel had positive words, hangman and such nice things. The other was an underpass of our local park which had graffiti art with Instagram tags on them. I thought of a girl, getting away from the bustle of college by hiding in the bathroom to find writing on the stall, and thinking about how it got there. Feeling overwhelmed by the negative messages. Envisioning what led someone to draw or write it there.
I reflect back on a full body female someone drew on the bathroom stalls in high school, what if it moved? to follow the girl as she walks by?”
This film is for those who left their stories behind and those who have yet to be discovered.
