Video Game

In The 9 Chambers: Tower of Doom you play a fighter named Jonas who fights for justice just like his uncle, a local hero known as Gold Fist. One day, Gold Fist decides to tell Jonas the key to becoming a great fighter. He tells Jonas to seek out the Tower of Doom and to defeat all fighters in the nine chambers within. This tower is known to all worldly traveling fighters and it is now known by Jonas. He wishes to fight his way through the nine chambers in order to gain the same power that his uncle has. But…what will he do when he encounters the secret that is hidden in the last chamber?
The 9 Chambers: Tower of Doom is a retro style beat-em-up video game reminiscent of the classic fighting games of the 1990s. It is inspired by games like Double Dragon and Streets of Rage. The game was developed using Unity and a 2D fighter template asset by Mikel Osarion. I completed the game design, UI, mechanics, and additional coding using Microsoft Visual Studio. The game art was created using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I produced all of music composition for the game using GarageBand and Logic Pro X.
I believe that the beat-em-up genre has not received sufficient attention from the video game industry in recent years, even from the indie game space. Aside from the River City Girls series, 2D beat-em-up games released in the past three years have primarily been remakes of past games. Most of the current popular 2D indie games have been designed in a “Metroidvania” style. My aim is to make a game similar to Double Dragon or Streets of Rage. Developing this game will be my first milestone towards making my dream creative studio become a reality.

Artist Bio

Josh Estevez loves all forms of art and media, especially comics and street art. Particularly the street art seen in New York City, where he was born. But Josh's greatest passion in life is video games. His dream is to open up his own creative studio called Thumb Labor. This studio would focus on developing and designing indie video games. Video games have always been a part of Josh's life—he loves playing them and he loves critiquing them. Josh has an Associate’s Degree in Graphic Design from Norwalk Community College and is currently earning his BFA in Digital Media & Design, with a concentration in Web & Interactive Media Design from the University of Connecticut.
