Artist Statement

Understanding Tat is a 10-minute mini documentary about my journey to learn more about my Uncle Tat. I was 9 years old when I really started talking to him, but I never got to see him often as he lived in California at the time. I’m now 21 years old and throughout my life I’ve always been told the phrase “You’re just like your Uncle Tat”. But it took until now for me to really ask why. How am I like him? I didn’t know much about him beyond some surface level details. So, I took this opportunity to talk to my family, look through some of his things, and try to figure out if there was more to this statement. We like some of the same shows, have some similar hobbies. But I wanted to know more, what was he like around other people? Did he go out much? Was he a shy person? Some of the answers surprised me and by sharing what I’ve learned, I want to encourage others to learn more about their family. Especially because some family members could be cooler than you think.
