Artist Statement
“A Closer Look: Student Internships” is an essay documentary that explores students’ perspectives on their futures and the challenges of securing internships. Focusing specifically on the Digital Media and Design (DMD) department at the University of Connecticut, the film follows the narrator’s journey, offering reflections on how future students can enhance their opportunities—ideally beyond what the narrator personally experienced. Directed by me, Pablo Jose Gonzalez Miranda, the documentary draws from my own struggles with internships and the uncertainty of navigating career pathways. My personal journey—moving to the U.S. at fourteen without a guiding figure to help me through high school, college, and internship opportunities—shaped the emotional core of the film. I intimately understand the stress of navigating these transitions without a clear roadmap or support system. This project represents my love for film as a medium to transform personal experiences into creative expression. By sharing this story, I hope to provide cathartic insight to others facing similar challenges, offering a voice to those uncertain about their futures while encouraging them to persevere.
