Artist Statement
That’s The Spirit is a 3D animated comedy film directed by Nicole Zollino, created using Blender and Cinema4D. The story follows Alice Lavender Mancuso, a lonely girl who accidentally blows herself up while using the microwave. As a ghost, she realizes how unfulfilling her life is and becomes determined to come back to life for a second chance. The only problem? She must first defeat the Grim Reaper in battle… The idea stemmed from some personal reflection. As an introvert, I spend most of my time alone and often feel like I’ve missed out on experiences my peers have had. When this thought crosses my mind, I can’t help but regret not making the most of my time. This short explores these feelings through a character who must confront her stagnant lifestyle and fight for a chance to improve. While themes of loneliness and determination drive its story, That’s The Spirit is ultimately a comedy. The short draws on an absurd tone inspired by 2000s Western cartoons and modern internet animation. I hope that people will get a kick out of it!
