Artist Statement
Working on this film was an experience I could’ve never predicted. Going into it, I always wondered what my grandma’s past was like growing up in Georgia. Getting her to open up on camera was already a tough task, as she is very closed off emotionally for the most part, but once we were able to make that break though, we were able to create something completely new. A lot of my life is heavily inspired by my grandmother, from the food that I eat, to the topics I care about. During the process of creating this film, I found myself growing with it a lot. Initially, the film was planned to just be a biographical documentary about my grandmother, but as time went on, I realized that my story needed to be told as well, because her impact on me was tremendous. I ended up digging deep inside of myself and sharing very personal stories about my relationship with my family members. This was very therapeutic, and I’m hoping that this documentary resonates with people.
