Artist Bio

Norah Finch grew up in Milton, Massachusetts and has been an artist for as long as she can remember. She is now a senior at the University of Connecticut, majoring in Digital Media and Design with a concentration in 3D Animation. She excels in her work and has been awarded a Fine Arts scholarship and earned a place on the School of Fine Arts Dean’s List every semester.

She first fell in love with the artform during an introductory animation class. She reveled in the ability to create using a medium that challenged her both creatively and technically. She finds inspiration in both the mundanity and extravagance of life. Whether it be through modeling an ornate bathroom, simulating a dark winter’s night, or exploring humanity through her 3D-animated senior project.

Artist Statement

Sonder is the idea that every person is living a life as vividly as our own. Everyone, on any given day, is experiencing something unique. Each person has their own relationships, experiences, and day-to-day life, and strangers passing by on the street will be oblivious. I have always been fascinated by this concept — the idea that everyone is the protagonist of their own life, and I will only ever have a glimpse of it.

My 3D animated project explores this concept, specifically focusing on parent-child relationships. From the point of view of a young cashier at a supermarket, the audience gets to interpret the different relationships and scenarios of each customer. Every character is faceless, leaving only the customer’s items and mannerisms to clue the cashier and audience into their life. A purposefully vague beginning and end will leave the audience to interpret the cashier’s life as they have for each customer in the animation, as well as every person they might have or will pass by in real life.
