Artist Bio

Mari Klein is a Digital Media and Design student at University of Connecticut, concentrating in 3D Animation. Although most of her studies involve working with 3D graphics, 2D illustrations are a major aspect of her creative process and final work. Throughout Mari’s life, she has strived to learn new programs and techniques to improve her artistic skills and turn her frightening ideas into reality. The horror and psychological thriller genres are a constant source of inspiration for her personal work. Many of her projects present otherworldly creatures and dark environments to disturb her audience in the same way classic horror films such as The Thing and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre do. Mari believes the world we live in can be unsettling yet fantastical and consistently presents this perspective in her work.

Artist Statement

My animated short is meant to frighten the audience by presenting a teenager’s warped perspective of her first therapy session and irrational fears which she personifies as grotesque monsters. I crafted a horrifying experience to help viewers connect with those who are mentally and physically debilitated by phobias. Contained Conditions discusses Dysmorphophobia, Mysophobia, Agoraphobia, Haphephobia, and Nyctophobia. These intense fears can make an individual’s life unbearable as they are in a constant state of anxiety and discomfort. To a certain extent, I believe that if one person experiences the emotions of another, they will gain a profound understanding of their peer’s life and hopefully try to support them to the best of their ability. Therefore, by ensuring the viewers of my short story are at least unsettled by its eerie tone and the otherworldly monsters it showcases, viewers will gain empathy for those with one or multiple phobias.
