Artist Statement
If I had the chance to show the world anything, it’d be how boxing changed my life. The sport is often taken as just that – a sport. However, the discipline transcends this, becoming a way of living. Continuously chasing the breaking of oneself seems counterintuitive, but it’s this exact quality that makes boxing so special. Life constantly throws hardship at us and at times we are offered no agency. But what if there was a chance to ‘fight’ against this? What if challenge were present, and fear abundant, but you take a step forward? Boxing provides the opportunity to take this from imagination to habit. Air is impossible to catch, muscles on fire, an audience roaring at your pain, a mind searching for the way out – this environment is where a fighter discovers themself. When there is no longer an escape from struggle, the human spirit is revealed: an ability to trudge forward even while the legs beneath you fight against it. With “Tale of the Tape” I share these moments in a mixed-media web documentary capturing my journey with the sport. Being a student/new to the sport, I offer a uniquely relatable window into the experience.
